To connect Xero to Microsoft Copilot, connect your Xero organisation in Windsor.ai at onboard.windsor.ai/app/xero, then add Windsor as a Model Context Protocol (MCP) tool inside Microsoft Copilot Studio and point it at https://mcp.windsor.ai with your Windsor API key. Once the tool is connected, you can ask Copilot plain-language questions about your invoices, cash flow, and profit and loss, with no code and no CSV exports.

The result is a live, read-only line to your accounting data. Instead of clicking through Xero reports, you type a question and Copilot answers from your own numbers.

  • No code. Authorize Xero once, add one tool in Copilot Studio, and you are done.
  • Plain language. Ask about overdue invoices, monthly revenue, or reconciliation gaps the way you would ask a colleague.
  • Read-only and safe. Windsor.ai reads and reports your Xero data and never writes back or changes anything in Xero.
  • Cross-channel. Combine Xero with other sources in the same agent for a single source of truth across finance and marketing.

Start for free. Windsor.ai has a free forever plan, no credit card, with paid plans from 19 dollars per month. Connect your Xero organisation at onboard.windsor.ai/app/xero and add it to Copilot in a couple of minutes.

Before you start

You will need three things:

  • A Xero organisation with real data (invoices, bank transactions, contacts) to analyze.
  • A Windsor.ai account. It is free forever with no credit card. The Windsor.ai Xero connector handles the sign-in and pulls your accounting data.
  • Access to Microsoft Copilot Studio, where you will add Windsor as a tool for your agent.

How to connect Xero to Microsoft Copilot

The whole setup is three steps and takes about two minutes.

Step 1: Connect Xero in Windsor.ai

Go to onboard.windsor.ai/app/xero, sign in, and authorize Xero. The connection is read-only. Pick the organisation you want to report on, then click Next. Windsor.ai now has a live, read-only line to your Xero data.

Step 2: Add Windsor as an MCP tool in Copilot Studio

In Microsoft Copilot Studio, open or create an agent. Go to Tools, click Add a tool, then New tool, then Model Context Protocol. Fill in the fields as follows:

  • Server name: Windsor MCP
  • Server URL: https://mcp.windsor.ai
  • Authentication: API Key
  • Header name: Authorization
  • Value: Bearer YOUR_WINDSOR_API_KEY (paste your own Windsor API key after the word Bearer)

Click Save to create the tool.

Step 3: Connect the tool and ask

Open a new chat. Copilot asks you to connect to Windsor MCP through the Connections manager. Click Connect, then Submit. Return to the chat and click Retry until the status shows connected. Add the Windsor MCP tool to your agent, then ask about your data in plain language.

If the tool still shows as not connected, that is almost always the connection step. Reopen the Connections manager, confirm your API key is entered with the Bearer prefix, click Connect and Submit again, then click Retry in the chat. A fresh chat usually clears it.

Ways to connect Xero to Copilot

There are a few paths from Xero to Microsoft Copilot. Here is how they compare.

Method Setup effort Code Best for
Windsor.ai MCP (recommended) About two minutes None Asking Copilot plain-language questions across invoices, cash flow, P&L, and other sources in one agent
Native Xero for Microsoft 365 Depends on rollout None Quick lookups inside Microsoft apps, scoped to what the native integration exposes
Custom API and code Days of developer time Yes Teams that want to build and maintain their own bespoke pipeline

The Windsor MCP flow is the fastest no-code route and keeps every Xero table available to the same agent.

The Xero data that matters

Once connected, Copilot can read your core Xero tables through Windsor.ai. These are the fields most teams ask about. For the complete list, see the full Xero field reference.

Area Useful fields
Invoices invoices.InvoiceNumber, invoices.Total, invoices.AmountPaid, invoices.AmountDue, invoices.Status, invoices.DueDate, invoices.Contact
Bank transactions bank_transactions.Total, bank_transactions.Type, bank_transactions.Date, bank_transactions.IsReconciled, bank_transactions.BankAccount
Payments payments.Amount, payments.Date, payments.Status, payments.IsReconciled, payments.Invoice
Profit and loss profit_and_loss.Account, profit_and_loss.Amount, profit_and_loss.Section, profit_and_loss.Period
Balance sheet balance_sheet.Account, balance_sheet.Amount, balance_sheet.Section, balance_sheet.Period
Contacts contacts.Name, contacts.IsCustomer, contacts.IsSupplier, contacts.Balances, contacts.EmailAddress

What to ask Copilot: prompt ideas

Paste any of these into Copilot once the Windsor MCP tool is connected.

Show my invoices Total, Amount Paid, and Amount Due by month for this year, and flag every invoice with a Status of AUTHORISED that is past its Due Date.
Summarize my Profit and Loss: list the Amount for each Account grouped by Section and Period for the last two quarters, and highlight the biggest movers.
Rank my contacts by outstanding Balance, and split customers from suppliers using Is Customer and Is Supplier.
List bank transactions where Is Reconciled is false for the last 60 days, grouped by Bank Account, with the Total for each.

Is my Xero data safe?

Yes. The Xero connection is read-only for reporting. Windsor.ai reads and reports your accounting data and never writes back or changes anything in Xero, so there is no risk of an AI edit touching an invoice or a bank feed. You authorize Xero through its own secure sign-in, and you can disconnect the source in Windsor.ai at any time. In Copilot Studio, the Windsor MCP tool only sees the data your Windsor account is connected to.

Bonus: analyze Xero alongside your full stack

Xero tells you what happened in the books. The bigger picture appears when you put it next to the rest of your data. Because Windsor.ai connects 350+ sources, you can add connectors like Stripe, QuickBooks, and your ad platforms to the same agent and ask Copilot cross-channel questions, for example comparing marketing spend against invoiced revenue and ROAS in one place. That turns Copilot into a single source of truth for finance and marketing, not just an accounting lookup.

Prefer a different assistant? The same read-only connector works elsewhere too. See how to connect Xero to ChatGPT for the equivalent setup.

Try it now. Connect Xero to Copilot with Windsor.ai on the free forever plan, no credit card. Paid plans start from 19 dollars per month. Get started at onboard.windsor.ai/app/xero.

Conclusion

Connecting Xero to Microsoft Copilot with Windsor.ai takes three no-code steps: authorize Xero in Windsor.ai, add Windsor MCP as a tool in Copilot Studio, and ask. From there you can query invoices, cash flow, profit and loss, and reconciliation in plain language, all read-only, and blend Xero with the rest of your stack for true cross-channel reporting.
