Instagram analytics means tracking what your posts, Reels, Stories, and account actually do, reach, engagement, follower growth, audience makeup, and using that to decide what to do next. This guide is organized the way teams actually use it in practice, not as a generic feature list: the order below reflects which jobs the most Windsor.ai customers do first, based on real connected-account activity across ChatGPT, Claude, and Copilot.
A small set of fields dominates: post and Reel performance data (reach, saves, shares, comments, likes, views) is what the large majority of connected accounts pull first. Audience breakdowns (country, gender, age, city) are requested by a much smaller, more specialized group. Story-level data is requested by fewer accounts still. That drop-off is the map for this guide: full sections for the popular jobs, short summaries with links out for the specialized ones.
Post and Reel performance
This is the most common Instagram analytics job by a wide margin. Most connected accounts pull the same core set: media_type, media_reach, media_caption, media_saved, media_shares, media_comments_count, media_like_count, media_views, and media_permalink, keyed to media_id and timestamp. The most common full combination pulls all of those together for every post in one call, rather than one field at a time.
Pull my last 30 days of Instagram posts and Reels: caption, reach, saves,
shares, comments, likes, views, and post type. Sort by reach and tell me
what my top 3 posts have in common.
This works the same in ChatGPT, Claude, or Copilot once Instagram is connected to Windsor.ai, and the same pull can land in a Google Sheet or BigQuery table instead of a chat window if you want it running on a schedule.
Follower tracking
Instagram’s own API only returns follower count history for a recent window, not your account’s full history, which is the single most common wall teams hit when they first try to track growth over time. The fix is a scheduled daily pull that builds your own history going forward. Full walkthrough, including the version for public accounts you don’t own: Instagram follower tracker.
Engagement rate
Engagement rate isn’t one formula, it depends on what you’re dividing by: reach, followers, or views for Reels specifically. Use the Instagram Engagement Rate Calculator to compute all three, mapped to the exact fields behind each one: media_engagement, total_interactions, accounts_engaged, media_saved, and media_shares, alongside the more familiar likes and comments.
Reels retention
Reels-specific metrics like skip rate and average watch time see disproportionate use from ChatGPT users specifically, more so than ordinary post fields do. See the Instagram Reels retention guide for the four fields that matter and how to check them against your own history, not a generic benchmark.
Audience demographics
Audience breakdowns, country, gender, age, and city, are a smaller, more specialized job than post performance, but common enough to be worth doing right. Instagram’s API only allows one breakdown dimension per request, which is a frequent point of confusion: asking for country and gender in the same call fails. The fix is four separate calls.
Pull my Instagram audience breakdown four separate times: once by
country, once by gender, once by age, and once by city. Combine the
results into one table for me.
Paid plus organic
Only a minority of teams pulling Instagram Insights also pull Meta Ads data in the same week, so for most accounts these stay separate workflows rather than one blended report. If you’re running Instagram ads, see the Instagram Ads templates for that side specifically.
Agency reporting
A meaningful share of connected teams manage a large number of Instagram accounts at once, not just one, which is the agency and multi-brand use case. The most common wall here isn’t a data question, it’s a plan limit: connecting more accounts than a plan allows is one of the most frequent messages teams see. Windsor’s free forever plan covers a limited number of accounts, with paid plans starting at $19 a month for more.
I manage Instagram for 12 client accounts. Pull reach, engagement, and
follower growth for all 12 over the last 30 days, and rank them from
best to worst performing.
Competitor benchmarking
You can pull public Instagram data for any account, not just your own, no login or scraping required. See Instagram Competitor Analysis with Claude and How to Connect Instagram Public Data to ChatGPT.
Publish and moderate
Beyond reading data, Windsor’s write actions let ChatGPT, Claude, and Copilot publish posts and manage comments directly. See Manage Your Instagram Content With an AI Assistant and You Can Now Post to Instagram From Claude With Windsor.ai.
Stories
Story-level data, views, reach, replies, exits, and swipe-forwards, is requested far less often than post or Reel data, largely because Stories expire and archiving them takes extra setup. Full field definitions for Stories live in the Instagram Metrics Explained glossary.
Instagram API without code
Everything above uses Instagram’s real API fields, the same data Meta’s own Graph API exposes, without writing any code. Connect your account to Windsor.ai once, and ChatGPT, Claude, or Copilot can query it directly through plain-language prompts, or you can schedule the same pulls into Sheets, Looker Studio, or BigQuery.
